UK Space Agency Rocket


The UK Space Agency is responsible for developing and launching the country's space shuttles, more here https://orbitaltoday.com/. Each of these space shuttles has been a unique vehicle and has provided valuable service to the humankind. It was essential for the agency to take this part of their space history back to the future for future use. One such vehicle was the Saturn V Rocket. This rocket was used for testing the joints that would be needed to attach to the moon. The US was not ready at that time to attempt to land a manned mission to the moon, so the UK stepped in and offered to do this research for NASA.


When the Saturn V rocket was designed and built, the UK was one of only two nations that built them. The other nation that attempted to build a space vehicle was Russia. The British got into a contract with NASA to build and test the new V-rocket, along with three other experimental vehicles. The entire thing came together to become the world's first space station. Although the space station was never used, the testing went well and NASA ended up awarding the United Kingdom with a contract to design and build many more stations.

So why did the UK let the opportunity pass by? There are many theories, but the most likely one is that the UK was not ready to invest in the space agency, or that they did not want to be tied into an American program. After all, much of the technology used in the Saturn V Rocket is similar to what is currently being used in our SLS, or strap on laser asteroid interceptor. The UK may have felt that it was better to remain focused on its rocket and space exploration efforts, while the United States took a risk and invested in a technology that is not fully tested yet. Even if the UK was not interested in investing further in this technology, it may have been interested in trying to develop a spaceplane. The Wright Brothers had already designed a project to try and do just this, but it never got off the ground because it was too complicated.


As the SLS and the Space Shuttle began their illustrious careers, the UK was left behind. It is widely believed that the Space Shuttle became redundant as soon as the space shuttle program ended. The reason for this is that no one really understood how useful this system could be, but the agency just kept it around for political reasons. Had the UK invested in the space shuttle, or had it built a space station, we might not be in the situation we are today.

During the last decade, due to the popularity of the space shuttle program, private organizations like Orbital Technologies and NanoTech Systems have been attempting to develop a vehicle that will compete with the Russian Soyuz and Chinese Shenzhou capsules. Unfortunately, they have not been successful. In fact, one of their proposals was rejected by NASA, which is why these companies were given only a one-year test launch privilege.


Considering that the UK has not only built the world's largest and most stable rocket, but also one of the most effective and reliable capsules, it might be time for the UK to invest in a new space agency. While it would be great to see some of the old programs upstaged by new companies, this may not be possible. If nothing else, we should learn from the mistakes that were made with the space shuttles. By watching the way these companies work to build the international space station, we can learn a lot about what makes a good space vehicle. Perhaps if we spend another ten years working on reusable space vehicles we will learn enough not to make those mistakes.
